The Fresnel Diffractive Array Imager (FDAI) is based on a new optical concept for space telescopes, developed at Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie (IRAP), Toulouse, France. For the visible and near-infrared it has already proven its performances in resolution and dynamic range. We propose it now for astrophysical applications in the ultraviolet with apertures from 6 to 30 meters, aimed at imaging in UV faint astrophysical sources close to bright ones, as well as other…
Review of high-contrast imaging systems for current and future ground-based and space-based telescopes III: technology opportunities and pathways
TLDR
An overview of novel optical technologies and systems that are implemented or considered for high-contrast imaging instruments on both ground-based and space telescopes, and the design and manufacturing of key components like advanced deformable mirrors and coronagraphic optics, and their amalgamation in "adaptive coronagraph" systems.
Efficient high-order accurate Fresnel diffraction via areal quadrature and the nonuniform FFT
TLDR
An appendix shows the mathematical equivalence of the boundary diffraction wave, angular integration, and line integral formulae, then analyzes a new non-singular reformulation that eliminates their common difficulties near the geometric shadow edge, which supplies a robust edge integral reference against which to validate the main proposal.
Imaging and Characterization of Extrasolar Planets with the Next Generation of Space Telescopes
The study and characterization of the exoplanets’ atmospheres and composition is in its infancy. The large facilities that will make feasible to image an exo-Earth are currently under study. This
Imaging and Characterization of Extrasolar Planets with the Next Generation of Space Telescopes
TLDR
This contribution to the special issue on “detection and characterization of extrasolar planets” is a summary on the current status of the design studies to build large space-based facilities working in the 100–3000 nm range for this purpose.
Kernel-nulling for a robust direct interferometric detection of extrasolar planets
TLDR
This work introduces a modified nuller architecture that enables the extraction of information that is robust against piston excursions, and presents the properties of VIKiNG: the VLTI Infrared Kernel NullinG, an instrument concept within the Hi-5 framework for the 4-UT VL TI infrastructure that takes advantage of the proposed architecture, to produce three self-calibrating nulled outputs.
