Improved Learning in a Large-Enrollment Physics Class
@article{Deslauriers2011ImprovedLI, title={Improved Learning in a Large-Enrollment Physics Class}, author={Louis Deslauriers and Ellen N. Schelew and Carl E. Wieman}, journal={Science}, year={2011}, volume={332}, pages={862 - 864} }
We compared the amounts of learning achieved using two different instructional approaches under controlled conditions. [] Key Result We found increased student attendance, higher engagement, and more than twice the learning in the section taught using research-based instruction.

An Intervention-Based Active-Learning Strategy To Enhance Student Performance in Mathematics
- Education
- 2018
Experiments were performed to study the effect of integrating an intervention strategy on student learning in an active learning environment in three different undergraduate mathematics courses. In…
ACTIVE LEARNING FOR LARGE-ENROLLMENT CLASSES IN CONVENTIONAL CLASSROOMS
- Education
- 2018
Orientation of the students’ attitudes during the term and analysis of the comments they made in the evaluation of the subject and of their teachers allowed us to conclude that the students perceive that engagement in their own learning affects positively their conceptual understanding and their problema solving skills.
Using Theory to Inform Practice in the Advanced Physics Classroom
- Education, Physics
- 2020
Physics education research has focused much more on lower-level, introductory courses as compared to upper division and graduate physics education. However, there are general principles and findings…
Teaching methods comparison in a large calculus class
- Education

In this paper we put forth a model for physics course reform that uniquely uses proven, research-based active learning strategies to help students improve their physics knowledge and problem-solving…
Managing Active Learning Processes in Large First Year Physics Classes: The Advantages of an Integrated Approach
- Education
- 2014
Turning lectures into interactive, student-led question and answer sessions is known to increase learning, but enabling interaction in a large class seems an insurmountable task. This can discourage…
Testing the impact of active learning in first year undergraduate natural science courses
- Education
- 2017
The last years have seen an increasing debate about the role of the lecturer in undergraduate courses. Recent investigations suggest that an instructional approach which can in a short term be…
Peer Learning as a Key Component of an Integrated Teaching Method: Overcoming the Complexities of Physics Teaching in Large Size Classes
- Education
- 2021
Over the last decade, policy makers have urged universities to innovate their teaching methodologies. Although educational research has shown that active methods lead to improvements in learners’…
How to Motivate Students in Large-enrollment Courses for Active-learning
- Education6th International Conference on Higher Education Advances (HEAd'20)
- 2020
Large-enrollment courses are often necessary platforms for teaching in universities all over the world. This article will begin with a theoretical approach in which we introduce proofs from cognitive…
Measuring actual learning versus feeling of learning in response to being actively engaged in the classroom
- EducationProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
- 2019
Comparing passive lectures with active learning using a randomized experimental approach and identical course materials, it is found that students in the active classroom learn more, but they feel like they learn less, and attempts to evaluate instruction based on students’ perceptions of learning could inadvertently promote inferior pedagogical methods.
