In many areas of India, the assessment of groundwater balance at the basin scale is a very important challenge for better management of this resource that is stressed by high exploitation through pumping for irrigation. A methodology is presented and applied to a case study in a hard-rock area. The methodology is based on the relationship between the water balance over a given period and resulting water level fluctuations (Water Table Fluctuation method). It is found that the main positive term…

Water Budgeting and Construction of Future Scenarios for Prediction and Management of Ground Water under Stressed Condition

The Indo-French Centre for Groundwater Research (IFCGR) has carried out intensive research for understanding the structure and functioning of the hard rock aquifers in granitic area by taking a small

Optimizing a piezometric network in the estimation of the groundwater budget: a case study from a crystalline-rock watershed in southern India

An estimate of the groundwater budget at the catchment scale is extremely important for the sustainable management of available water resources. Water resources are generally subjected to

Development of a tool for managing groundwater resources in semi‐arid hard rock regions: application to a rural watershed in South India

Until recently, aquifers located in hard rock formations (granite, gneiss, schist) were considered as a highly heterogeneous media, and no adequate methodology for groundwater management was

Distributed groundwater recharge potentials assessment based on GIS model and its dynamics in the crystalline rocks of South India

Extensive change in land use, climate, and over-exploitation of groundwater has increased pressure on aquifers, especially in the case of crystalline rocks throughout the world. To support

Climate-resilient strategies for sustainable management of water resources and agriculture

Holistic efforts of the stakeholders (farmers, local society, academia, scientists, policy makers, NGOs etc.) can provide better results to reduce the risks of climate change on agriculture and water resources as discussed in this paper.

A decision support tool with variable agro-climatic scenarios for sustainable groundwater management in semi-arid hard-rock areas

In most parts of India, and particularly in South India, groundwater levels are hazardously declining, which entails drought and inherent water-quality problems. The need of the hour is to adapt the

A simple groundwater balance tool to evaluate the three-dimensional specific yield and the two-dimensional recharge: application to a deeply weathered crystalline aquifer in southern India

Crystalline aquifers are among the most complex groundwater systems, requiring adequate methods for realistic characterization and suitable techniques for improving the long-term management of

On positive externalities from irrigated agriculture and their policy implications: An overview

Water has important economic values, mainly in the agricultural sector. Beside enhancing agricultural output and crop diversification, irrigation generates positive externalities which have been
