Background:Osteoporosis remains an underdiagnosed and undertreated major health problem. The current treatment rate for patients who have experienced at least 1 osteoporotic fracture is 20%–25%. Therefore, the Rheumatology and Internal Medicine Departments of Ochsner Clinic Foundation New Orleans implemented a mandatory rheumatology osteoporosis consult as part of preprinted admission orders for all patients after hip fracture surgery on the Internal Medicine service. Methods:We conducted a…
An Effective Team Approach to Improve Postoperative Hip Fracture Care
TLDR
The addition of a calcium/vitamin D supplement and an endocrinology appointment to the hospital discharge orders was an effective method of improving treatment and enhancing compliance.
Overcoming Barriers to Osteoporosis Care in Vulnerable Elderly Patients With Hip Fractures
TLDR
Effective OP care for the vulnerable hip fracture patient should be initiated early but may be complex and require coordination, and education programs may provide benefits at later stages, to improve adherence with treatment.
Systematic review on interventions to improve osteoporosis investigation and treatment in fragility fracture patients
TLDR
Outcome data was calculated within 6 months of screening from an intention-to-treat principle to derive an equated proportion (EP) across interventions to compare outcomes across the studies, therefore capturing both RCTs and other study designs typical of real-world settings.
Medical management in the acute hip fracture patient: a comprehensive review for the internist.
TLDR
A solid understanding of the issues associated with the acute hip fracture population is provided to enhance practice and allow for the best outcome for patients.
Coordinator-based systems for secondary prevention in fragility fracture patients
TLDR
Successful transformation of care relies upon consensus amongst all participants in the multi-disciplinary team that cares for fragility fracture patients, and endorsement of the proposed model within national healthcare policies and advocacy programmes can achieve alignment of the objectives of policy makers, professionals and patients.
Post-discharge management following hip fracture - get you back to B4: A parallel group, randomized controlled trial study protocol
TLDR
This is a parallel group, pragmatic randomized controlled trial to test the effectiveness of a post-fracture clinic compared with usual care on mobility for older adults following their hospitalization for hip fracture.
Exploring Patients' Perception of Osteoporosis Following a Fragility Fracture: Results of a Literature Review and Analysis of a Provincial Database
TLDR
Modifications to current OP interventions were proposed and guidance that could help create new, patient-centered interventions was provided after it showed that theories of behaviour change have not been integrated into post-fracture interventions, and that most patients do not perceive the OP-f Fracture link even after a baseline intervention.
Key outcomes are usually not reported in published fracture secondary prevention programs: results of a systematic review
TLDR
A secondary analysis of a systematic review on interventions to improve osteoporosis investigation and treatment found most interventions did not report key outcomes, and authors should consider including intervention costs, medication use beyond 6 months of the intervention, and re-fracture data in future fracture secondary prevention programs.
Improving quality of care in osteoporosis: Opportunities and challenges
TLDR
Recent studies have indicated that restructuring care at the system level is more likely to be successful, dependable, and durable than traditional quality improvement interventions focusing predominantly on physicians.
What is the Role of Coordinators in the Secondary Fracture Prevention Program?
TLDR
The coordinator in the FLS program plays an important role in the multidisciplinary management of vulnerable fractures, as well as in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and in maintaining continuity of treatment.

Missing a therapeutic window of opportunity: an audit of patients attending a tertiary teaching hospital with potentially osteoporotic hip and wrist fractures.
TLDR
Osteoporosis was overlooked by medical practitioners responsible for the care of this at-risk patient cohort, with little evidence of the medical profession offering information, further investigation, or treatment of patients who presented with a probable osteoporotic fracture of the hip or wrist.

TLDR
Older adults with hip fractures are not adequately treated for osteoporosis, which places them at increased risk of other osteoporeotic fractures, including recurrent hip fractures.
Interventions to improve osteoporosis treatment following hip fracture. A prospective, randomized trial.
TLDR
Patients who were provided with information and questions for their primary care physician about osteoporosis were more likely to receive appropriate therapeutic intervention than were patients who had not received the information and Questions.
Prescribing by general practitioners after an osteoporotic fracture
TLDR
The majority of patients sustaining an osteoporotic fracture are not prescribed any pharmaceutical agents for the secondary prevention of fracture one year after a primary fracture.
Hip fracture patients are not treated for osteoporosis: a call to action.
TLDR
Reducing osteoporotic fractures will require more effective approaches to managing hip fracture patients and other high-risk populations.
Low frequency of treatment of osteoporosis among postmenopausal women following a fracture.
TLDR
Most of the older women who had experienced a fracture of the hip, vertebra, or wrist did not receive drug treatment for osteoporosis within 1 year following the fracture, and Interventions to improve the detection and treatment of osteoporeosis in high-risk patients need to be developed.
Redesigning the care of fragility fracture patients to improve osteoporosis management: a health care improvement project.
TLDR
Reliable osteoporosis care is achievable by redesigning clinical processes by developing new processes that assure more reliable, population-based care of fragility fracture patients.
Direct Medical Costs Attributable to Osteoporotic Fractures
TLDR
Although hip fractures resulted in more incremental cost than any other fracture type, this amounted to only 37% of the total incremental cost of all moderate-trauma fractures combined, and the incremental costs of osteoporotic fractures are substantial.
Medication use patterns for osteoporosis: an assessment of guidelines, treatment rates, and quality improvement interventions.
TLDR
Frequency of treatment of osteoporosis in at-risk populations is low, and an assessment of the literature revealed no clear and consistent predictors of undertreatment, but most of the 8 interventions designed to improve bone mineral density showed improvement in treatment rates.
