Aims. A transient astrophysical event observed in both gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) channels would yield rich scientific rewards. A first program initiating EM follow-ups to possible transient GW events has been developed and exercised by the LIGO and Virgo community in association with several partners. In this paper, we describe and evaluate the methods used to promptly identify and localize GW event candidates and to request images of targeted sky locations. Methods…

Planning for prompt follow-up of Gravitational Wave events
The search for a gravitational wave (GW) signal is one of the most fascinating and challenging areas of modern physics. The Advanced LIGO detectors will have a first “science run” in late 2015, while
Prospects and challenges in the electromagnetic follow-up of LIGO-Virgo gravitational wave transients

  • 2014
The kilometer-scale ground based gravitational wave (GW) detectors, LIGO and Virgo, are being upgraded to their advanced configurations. We expect the two LIGO observatories to undertake a 3 month
Rapid alerts for following up gravitational wave event candidates
Gravitational waves carry unique information about high-energy astrophysical events such as the inspiral and merger of neutron stars and black holes, core collapse in massive stars, and other
Capturing the electromagnetic counterparts of binary neutron star mergers through low-latency gravitational wave triggers
We investigate the prospects for joint low-latency gravitational wave (GW) detection and prompt electromagnetic (EM) follow-up observations of coalescing binary neutron stars (BNSs). For BNS mergers
End to End Simulations of Gravitational Wave Electromagnetic Follow-Up Program
The search for gravitational waves is about to enter a new scientific era. The expected completion of Advanced Ligo and Advanced Virgo in the coming years will provide physicists with the necessary
High-Energy Electromagnetic Offline Follow-Up of Ligo-Virgo Gravitational-Wave Binary Coalescence Candidate Events
We present two different search methods for electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational-wave (GW) events from ground-based detectors using archival NASA high-energy data from the Fermi Gamma-ray
Strategies for the Follow-up of Gravitational Wave Transients with the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The observation of the electromagnetic counterpart of gravitational-wave (GW) transient GW170817 demonstrated the potential in extracting astrophysical information from multimessenger discoveries.
Electromagnetic follow-up of gravitational wave transient signal candidates
Pioneering efforts aiming at the development of multi-messenger gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) astronomy have been made. An EM observation follow-up program of candidate GW events
The H.E.S.S. gravitational wave rapid follow-up program
Gravitational Wave (GW) events are physical processes that significantly perturbate space-time, e.g. compact binary coalescenses, causing the production of GWs. The detection of GWs by a worldwide
LOCALIZATION OF SHORT DURATION GRAVITATIONAL-WAVE TRANSIENTS WITH THE EARLY ADVANCED LIGO AND VIRGO DETECTORS
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo advanced ground-based gravitational-wave detectors will begin collecting science data in 2015. With first detections expected

Identifying the host galaxy of gravitational wave signals
TLDR
A new statistic is proposed to identify the most likely host galaxy, ranking galaxies based on their position, distance, and luminosity, and it is found that when imaging a single galaxy, the statistic correctly identifies the true host 50% of the time.
Transients in the Local Universe
Two different reasons make the search for transients in the nearby Universe (d < 200 Mpc) interesting and urgent. First, there exists a large gap in the luminosity of the brightest novae (-10 mag)
WHAT IS THE MOST PROMISING ELECTROMAGNETIC COUNTERPART OF A NEUTRON STAR BINARY MERGER
The final inspiral of double neutron star and neutron-star-black-hole binaries are likely to be detected by advanced networks of ground-based gravitational wave (GW) interferometers. Maximizing the
Linking optical and infrared observations with gravitational wave sources through transient variability
Optical and infrared observations have thus far detected more celestial cataclysms than have been seen in gravity waves (GW). This argues that we should search for gravity wave signatures that
Electromagnetic counterparts of compact object mergers powered by the radioactive decay of r‐process nuclei
The most promising astrophysical sources of kHz gravitational waves (GWs) are the inspiral and merger of binary neutron star(NS)/black hole systems. Maximizing the scientific return of a GW detection
Final Results of the All-sky Search for Gravitational-wave Bursts in the First Joint LIGO-GEO-Virgo Run
We present results from an all-sky search for unmodeled gravitational-wave bursts in the data collected by the LIGO, GEO 600 and Virgo detectors between November 2006 and October 2007. The search is
Search for gravitational-wave bursts associated with gamma-ray bursts using data from LIGO Science Run 5 and Virgo Science Run 1
