BACKGROUND Previous studies demonstrated inactivation of vitamin B12 by nitrous oxide (N(2)O). The intraoperative exposure to N(2)O was shown to induce megaloblastic anaemia and myelopathy in subjects with subclinical vitamin B12 deficiency.
