Disturbances in olfactory circuitry have been associated with depression in humans. The olfactory bulbectomized (OBX lesion) has been largely used as a model of depression-like behavior in the rat. However, quantitative neuronal rearrangements in key brain regions in this animal model have not been evaluated yet. Accordingly, we investigated changes in hippocampal plasticity as well as behavioral deficits in this animal model. OBX-induced behavioral deficits were studied in a battery of tests… Expand
Olfactory bulbectomy induces neuronal rearrangement in the entorhinal cortex in the rat
TLDR
It is proposed that the lack of input from the olfactory bulbs resulted in serial neuronal rearrangements in the PirC, EC, and hippocampus leading, at least partially, to behavioral deficits in emotion and memory processes. Expand
The olfactory bulbectomized rat as a model of depression: The hippocampal pathway
TLDR
This review will focus on the mechanisms by which proposed pharmaceuticals impact hippocampal-dependent processes and behavior, and how repeated administration of novel natural and synthetic antidepressant compounds can improve certain aspects of depression-like behavior and hippocampal function. Expand
Behavior and the cholinergic parameters in olfactory bulbectomized female rodents: Difference between rats and mice
TLDR
It is demonstrated that rats and mice differently respond to OBX, in particular, OBX does not significantly affect the cholinergic system in rats. Expand
Long-lasting Postnatal Sensory Deprivation Alters Dendritic Morphology of Pyramidal Neurons in the Rat Hippocampus: Behavioral Correlates
TLDR
The findings suggest that experience-dependent structural plasticity is capable of spreading far beyond the manipulated sensory zones and the inevitable functional alterations can be expressed in a multifactorial sex-dependent manner. Expand
Reversible olfactory dysfunction impaired learning and memory with impaired hippocampal synaptic plasticity and increased corticosterone release in mice
TLDR
Results indicated that reversible olfactory dysfunction elicited impaired hippocampal function in mice, and the higher corticotisterone release after Olfactory deficiency might serve as an underling mechanism. Expand
Neonatal olfactory bulbectomy enhances locomotor activity, exploratory behavior and binding of NMDA receptors in pre-pubertal rats
TLDR
It is suggested that nOBX produces pre-pubertal behavioral disturbances and NMDA receptor changes that are transitory with recovery of olfaction early in adulthood. Expand
Caffeine prevents neurodegeneration and behavioral alterations in a mice model of agitated depression
TLDR
Caffeine confirms its efficacy in preventing neurodegeneration associated with memory impairment and may be considered as a promising therapeutic tool in the prophylaxis and/or treatment of depression. Expand
Hesperidin reverses cognitive and depressive disturbances induced by olfactory bulbectomy in mice by modulating hippocampal neurotrophins and cytokine levels and acetylcholinesterase activity.
TLDR
It is suggested that the main targets of hesperidin are pro-inflammatory cytokine modulation, helping to maintain brain plasticity and acetylcholinesterase activity regulation, which are closely linked with antidepressant-like action, as shown by behavior tests. Expand
Hippocampus Metabolic Disturbance and Autophagy Deficiency in Olfactory Bulbectomized Rats and the Modulatory Effect of Fluoxetine
TLDR
It is indicated that OBX caused marked abnormalities in hippocampus metabolites and autophagy, and fluoxetine could partly redress the metabolic disturbance and enhance autophagic to reverse the depressive-like behavior, but not the memory deficits in OBX rats. Expand
Activation of Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3 Mediates the Olfactory Deficit-Induced Hippocampal Impairments
TLDR
It is found that OBX induced memory deficits with activation of several memory-related protein kinases in the hippocampal extracts, and genetic ablation of GSK-3β by lentivirus-packed shRNA effectively rescued the memory deficits, synaptic disorder, and tauopathy. Expand

Impaired fear memory and decreased hippocampal neurogenesis following olfactory bulbectomy in rats
TLDR
The results suggest that decreased neurogenesis might at least partly contribute for behavioural deficits following OB, which was characterized by an increased activity in the open‐field test and impairment in passive avoidance behaviour and contextual fear conditioning. Expand
Behavioural and neurochemical features of olfactory bulbectomized rats resembling depression with comorbid anxiety
TLDR
The present study indicated that OB rats may be a model of depression with comorbid anxiety, characterized by agitation, sexual and cognitive dysfunction, neuronal degeneration, decreased protein expression of NR1, and decreased phosphorylation of CREB. Expand
The olfactory bulbectomised rat as a model of depression
TLDR
The olfactory bulbectomized rat is not only a model for detecting antidepressant activity but also one for exploring the inter-relationships between these systems that are also dysfunctional in patients with major depression. Expand
The olfactory bulbectomized rat as a model of depression: an update.
TLDR
As many of the changes exhibited by the OB rat are qualitatively similar to those observed in depressed patients, it may be concluded that the OB rats are a model of depression and not just a means whereby putative antidepressants may be tested. Expand
Morphological reorganization after repeated corticosterone administration in the hippocampus, nucleus accumbens and amygdala in the rat
TLDR
Results show for the first time neuronal morphological alterations in the NAcc in the CORT model of depression-like behaviors and add further information about the morphological reorganization occurring in CORT-sensitive regions of the limbic system. Expand
Decreased Hippocampal Neurogenesis Following Olfactory Bulbectomy is Reversed by Repeated Citalopram Administration
TLDR
The obtained data demonstrate that a citalopram-induced increase in neurogenesis in OB rats could be one possible mechanism by which antidepressants alleviate OB-induced depressive-like behavior. Expand
Morphofunctional state of neurons in the temporal cortex and hippocampus in relation to the level of spatial memory in rats after ablation of the olfactory bulbs
TLDR
Evidence is provided of the long-term nature of changes in the morphofunctional state of neurons in the brains of BER, correlating with their levels of spatial memory. Expand
Cellular Correlates of Olfactory Learning in the Rat Piriform Cortex
TLDR
Using a different paradigm of odor-training, it is shown that NMDA and betra-adrenergic receptors are involved at different stages of long-term memory consolidation. Expand
Remodeling of Hippocampal Spine Synapses in the Rat Learned Helplessness Model of Depression
TLDR
These results indicate that changes in depressive behavior are associated with remarkable remodeling of hippocampal spine synapses at the ultrastructural level, and this cellular mechanism may be an important component in the neurobiology of stress-related disorders such as depression. Expand
Reorganization of the morphology of hippocampal neurites and synapses after stress-induced damage correlates with behavioral improvement
TLDR
There is an intimate relationship between corticosteroid levels, hippocampal neuritic structure and hippocampal-dependent learning and memory and the effects of chronic stress on hippocampal dendrite morphology, the volume of the mossy fiber system, and number and morphology of synapses between mossy fibers and CA3 dendritic excrescences are evaluated.
