After its foundation in 331 BC, Alexandria was linked to the island of Pharos by the Heptastadion. The present study aims at understanding the impact of this building on the local water and sand dynamics. We used numerical models to compute the wind‐induced currents and sediment re‐suspension, comparatively without and in the presence of the Heptastadion. Results suggest that the Heptastadion was not only a link structure to reach the Pharos island, but a structure liable to reduce the sandy…

Hydrodynamic Modeling of the Roman Harbor of Portus in the Tiber Delta: The Impact of the North‐Eastern Channel on Current and Sediment Dynamics

This study examines the hydrodynamics of the Roman harbor of Portus during the Trajanic period (second century A.D.). We have evaluated the impact of the north‐eastern channel on water circulation

Geoarchaeology of Phoenicia's buried harbours: Beirut, Sidon and Tyre 5000 years of human-environment interactions

Using earth science and archaeological tools, we investigate 5000 years of human-environment interactions at Beirut, Sidon and Tyre. All three sites grew up around easily defendable pocket beaches

Ancient harbors and Holocene morphogenesis of the Ras Ibn Hani peninsula (Syria)

Navigational aspects of calling to the Great Harbour of Alexandria

More than ten years of archaeological surveys of the Great Harbour of Alexandria have completely changed the conception of the ancient topography of the port area of the city. The remains of ancient

Long-Term Relief Deformation and Sediment Characteristics of Alexandria Eastern Harbour, Egypt

Fourteen beach profiles covered a period of 54 years (1936-1990) were analyzed to understand the erosional and accretional behavior as well as the sediment drift pattern inside the Eastern Harbour of

Terrigenous-Carbonate Sediment Interface (Late Quaternary) Along the Northwestern Margin of the Nile Delta, Egypt

This petrological study characterizes the nature of various mixtures of terrigenous and carbonate sedimentary sequences of Late Pleistocene to Holocene age along the northwestern margin of the Nile

Dynamics of marine sands

Dynamics of marine sands' specifically deals with coastal and offshore sea areas, as well as rivers and estuaries, for sand and gravel sediments. The book presents a convenient and useable

Threshold of Sediment Motion in Coastal Environments

The threshold of sediment motion is one of the most fundamental quantities for sediment transport and dynamics. It is especially important in coastal and shelf seas, because the wave and current

Clay Mineral Distributions to Interpret Nile Cell Provenance and Dispersal: I. Lower River Nile to Delta Sector

Clay minerals serve as petrological markers that can he used to measure and interpret ongoing changes in River Nile sedimentation, now largely affected by anthropogenic influences. Closure in 1964 of
