Abstract Ice cores were sampled at four stations in McMurdo Sound (Ross Sea) between 1999 and 2003. At the beginning of year 2000, a very large iceberg (B-15) detached itself from the Ross Ice Shelf and stranded at the entrance of the Sound, preventing the usual oceanic circulation purging of the annual sea ice cover from this area. Ice textural studies showed that a second year sea ice cover was built-up at three out of the four stations: ice thickness increased to about 3 m. Repeated…

Abstract Sea ice often forms attached to floating ice shelves. Accumulating snow can depress its freeboard, creating a flooded slush layer that may subsequently freeze to form snow ice, rejecting…
Examining the interaction between multi-year landfast sea ice and the Mertz Glacier Tongue, East Antarctica: Another factor in ice sheet stability?
- Environmental Science

The Mertz Glacier tongue (MGT), East Antarctica, has a large area of multi-year fast sea ice (MYFI) attached to its eastern edge. We use various satellite data sets to study the extent, age, and…
Spatio-Temporal Variability and Model Parameter Sensitivity Analysis of Ice Production in Ross Ice Shelf Polynya from 2003 to 2015
- Environmental ScienceRemote. Sens.
- 2017
The results show that the ocean surface produces ice at a high rate within the distance of 20–30 km from the ice shelf front, and in most high production areas, the ice production significantly increases, while some local regions show a contrarily significant decreasing trend as a result of ice shelf expansion and iceberg events.
Evolution of supercooling under coastal Antarctic sea ice during winter

Abstract Interannual and seasonal variability of the biogeochemical characteristics of fast ice were analysed in relation to ambient conditions, water column properties and ice biota. According to…
Platelet ice, the Southern Ocean's hidden ice: a review

Abstract Basal melt of ice shelves is not only an important part of Antarctica's ice sheet mass budget, but it is also the origin of platelet ice, one of the most distinctive types of sea ice. In…
The effect of seafloor topography in the Southern Ocean on tabular iceberg drifting and grounding
