Background Supplemental immunisation activity (SIA) campaigns provide children with an additional dose of measles vaccine and deliver other child health interventions including vitamin A supplements, deworming medications and oral polio vaccines. They also require the mobilisation of a large health workforce. We assess the impact of the implementation of SIA campaigns on selected routine child and maternal health services in South Africa (SA). Methods We use district-level monthly headcount…
Impact of measles supplementary immunisation activities on utilisation of maternal and child health services in low-income and middle-income countries
TLDR
The paper contributes to the debate on vertical versus horizontal programmes to ensure universal access to vaccination by finding a reduction in care-seeking for treatment of child cough and a few significant effects at the country level.
Assessing the impact of polio supplementary immunisation activities on routine immunisation and health systems: a systematic review
TLDR
Polio SIAs are successful at increasing polio vaccine coverage, but the resources and infrastructures were not always utilised for delivery of non-polio vaccines and integration into routine service delivery, found a gap in standardised tools to evaluate SIAs.
The impact of supplementary immunization activities on routine vaccination coverage: An instrumental variable analysis in five low-income countries
TLDR
It is found that SIA exposure reduced the likelihood of receiving routine vaccines in all the countries included in the study; the coefficients of interest are however statistically insignificant for Gambia and Cote d’Ivoire.
Impact of an Intervention to Use a Measles, Rubella, and Polio Mass Vaccination Campaign to Strengthen Routine Immunization Services in Nepal
TLDR
Focusing on activities that are easily linked between SIAs and RI services, such as using SIA high-risk village list to strengthen RI microplanning and examining ways to minimize the impact of an SIA on RI session scheduling, should be prioritized when implementing SIAs.
Comparison of school based and supplemental vaccination strategies in the delivery of vaccines to 5-19 year olds in Africa - a systematic review
TLDR
In settings where school enrolment is suboptimal, as is the case in many African countries, the results show SIAs may be more effective in reaching school age children and adolescents than SBVs.
Comparison of school based and supplemental vaccination strategies in the delivery of vaccines to 5-19 year olds in Africa Africa Africa a systematic review
TLDR
In settings where school enrolment is suboptimal, as is the case in many African countries, the results show SIAs may be more effective in reaching school age children and adolescents than SBVs.
The use of supplementary immunisation activities to improve uptake of current and future vaccines in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review protocol
TLDR
A systematic review to assess whether SIAs complement routine immunisation programmes to improve vaccination coverage and prevent disease outbreaks and introduction of future vaccines against tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS is conducted.
The Potential Contribution of Supplementary Immunization Activities to Routine Immunization in Kebbi State, Nigeria
TLDR
It is demonstrated that the integration of RI into SIAs could improve RI coverage.

Supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) in South Africa: comprehensive economic evaluation of an integrated child health delivery platform
TLDR
The cost-effectiveness of the SIA child health delivery platform varies substantially across SA provinces, and it is substantially more cost-effective when vitamin A supplementation is included in the interventions administered.
Impact of measles elimination activities on immunization services and health systems: findings from six countries.
TLDR
The impact of accelerated measles elimination activities (AMEAs) on immunization services and health systems in 6 countries was evaluated, finding that the impact of AMEAs varied, with positive and negative implications in specific immunization and health system functions.

TLDR
The authors think that the WHO should focus its attention on diminishing the negative side-effects of NIDs and on getting the positive side- effects incorporated in the integrated health services in a sustainable way.

TLDR
Mass immunization campaigns can increase awareness of vaccination and may be appropriate in situations where new programs are to be initiated, in refugee situations where people congregate into areas with little infrastructure, and in disease eradication efforts when specific time goals are set.
Strengthening routine immunization services in the Western Pacific through the eradication of poliomyelitis.
TLDR
BCG, DTP3, and measles vaccine coverage more than doubled in the People's Democratic Republic of Lao and increased by >30% in the Kingdom of Cambodia during the same period, and coverage for all three antigens rose from 85% to 95%.
The cost-effectiveness of supplementary immunization activities for measles: a stochastic model for Uganda.
TLDR
The addition of SIAs was found to make outbreaks less frequent and lower in magnitude, and the benefit was reduced if routine coverage rates were higher, and compared favorably to that of other commonly accepted public health interventions in sub-Saharan Africa.
Impact of targeted programs on health systems: a case study of the polio eradication initiative.
TLDR
The results of these studies show that eliminating polio did not cause a diminution of funding for immunization against other illnesses, and improved planning in disease eradication initiatives can minimize disruptions in the delivery of other services.
