}RATIONALE
One of the limitations associated with lung transplantation is the lack of available organs.
OBJECTIVE
To determine whether a lung donor-management protocol could increase the number of lungs for transplantation without affecting the survival rates of the recipients.
METHODS
We implemented the San Antonio Lung Transplant protocol for managing potential lung donors according to modifications of standard criteria for donor selection and strategies for donor management. We then…

The authors' lung donor treatment protocol is safe for other grafts obtained from donors undergoing these procedures with the aim of increasing lungs available for transplantation and has no negative impact on the recovery rates ofother grafts or on early survival of heart, liver, pancreas or kidney recipients.

A retrospective analysis of 404 lung transplants carried out at the Reina Sofía University Hospital over 23 years shows the difficulty of the problem, which required the introduction of other variables into the analysis, and the combination of classical statistical methods and machine learning can support decision-making about the compatibility between donors and recipients.

A retrospective review of 128 consecutive lung or heart-lung transplants from January 1, 1997, to June 30, 2000 found that caution needs to be exercised in the uses of certain extended donor lungs because there seems to be an increased early mortality rate in that group of recipients.
