In this study, we report the effect of doping in morphotropic BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films on mechanical properties, revealing variations in the elasticity across the competing phases and their boundaries. Spectroscopic force-distance (F-D) curves and force mapping images by AFM are used to characterize the structure and elastic properties of three BFO thin-film candidates (pure-BFO, Ca-doped BFO, La-doped BFO). We show that softening behavior is observed in isovalent La-doped BFO, whereas hardening…

Influences of La on Optical and Electric Properties of BiFeO 3 Thin Films
Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3, short for BFO) is an important room-temperature single phase multiferroic materials. To further improve electric properties of BFO, La3+ was introduced. Bi1−xLa x FeO3 (x =

Phase transition enhanced superior elasticity in freestanding single-crystalline multiferroic BiFeO3 membranes
TLDR
The superior flexibility of freestanding single-crystalline BiFeO3 membranes is demonstrated, which are typical multiferroic materials with multifunctionality, which mainly originates from reversible rhombohedral-tetragonal phase transition, as revealed by phase-field simulations.
Strong spin-lattice coupling in tetragonal-like BiFeO3 films with thermal expansion anomalies
The evidence for a spin-lattice coupling in a tetragonal-like BiFeO3 (BFO) film is derived from thermal expansion measurements. Taking the advantage of La doping, the Neel temperature (TN) of the BFO

Revealing the flexoelectricity in the mixed-phase regions of epitaxial BiFeO3 thin films
TLDR
The correlation between elastic modulation and piezoresponse across the mixed-phase regions manifests that the flexoelectric effect results in the enhancement of the piezorsponse at the phase boundaries and in the MI regions, which accounts for the giant electromechanical effect in strained mixed- phase BiFeO3 films.
