Past studies on suicide have investigated the association of firearm ownership and suicide risk in the United States. The aim of the present study was to build on previous work by examining the impact of firearm storage practices and the strictness of firearm regulation on suicide rates at the state level. Data were compiled from primarily three sources. Suicide and firearm ownership information was obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Strictness of handgun regulation…

The Impact of Firearm Legislation on Firearm Deaths, 1991-2017.
TLDR
It is found that firearm laws significantly predicted state firearm suicide and homicide rates, and States with greater numbers of laws had reduced suicide and homicides rates compared with those with fewer laws.
Prevalence of long gun use in Maryland firearm suicides
TLDR
Long guns are used in a large proportion of Maryland firearm suicides, particularly in rural areas and disproportionately in youth suicides, which must be considered as part of access to lethal means or policy strategies in efforts to reduce the burden of firearm suicide.
Trigger Warning: The Causal Impact of Gun Ownership on Suicide
With a growing debate over tighter firearm regulations, we consider an important social consequence of increased firearm access: increased firearm suicides. Using data from the federal criminal
The Association Between Gun Ownership and Statewide Overall Suicide Rates
TLDR
Findings support the notion that access to and familiarity with firearms serves as a robust risk factor for suicide, and means safety efforts aimed at reducing accessibility and increasing safe storage of firearms would likely have a dramatic impact on statewide overall suicide rates.
Trigger warning: the causal impact of gun ownership on suicide
ABSTRACT With a growing debate over tighter firearm regulations, we consider an important social consequence of increased firearm access: increased firearm suicides. Using data from the federal
Violence, Guns, and Suicide in New Orleans: Results from a Qualitative Study of Recent Suicide Decedents
TLDR

Firearm laws and illegal firearm flow between US states

States with stricter firearm legislation are negatively impacted by states with weaker regulations, as crime guns flow from out-of-state.
Suicide by firearm in Switzerland: who uses the army weapon? Results from the national survey between 2000 and 2010.

Household firearm ownership and rates of suicide across the 50 United States.
TLDR
Household firearm ownership levels are strongly associated with higher rates of suicide, consistent with the hypothesis that the availability of lethal means increases the rate of completed suicide.
Firearm legislation and firearm-related fatalities in the United States.
TLDR
A higher number of firearm laws in a state are associated with a lower rate of firearm fatalities in the state, overall and for suicides and homicides individually, as well as an ecological and cross-sectional method.
Safer storage of firearms at home and risk of suicide: a study of protective factors in a nationally representative sample
TLDR
Those who stored their firearms locked or unloaded, or both, were less likely to commit suicide by firearms and further supports the utility of devices and practices intended to reduce the likelihood of unauthorised or impulsive use of firearms.
Homicide and suicide rates associated with implementation of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act.
TLDR
Implementation of the Brady Act appears to have been associated with reductions in the firearm suicide rate for persons aged 55 years or older but not with reduction in homicide rates or overall suicide rates.
Suicide in the home in relation to gun ownership.
TLDR
Owners of firearms should weigh their reasons for keeping a gun in the home against the possibility that it might someday be used in a suicide, and be aware of the potential risks to their health.
Lethality of firearms relative to other suicide methods: a population based study
TLDR
Limiting access to firearms is a potentially effective means of reducing suicide mortality and can reduce the proportion of fatal firearms related suicides by 32% among minors, and 6.5% among adults.
Firearms and Violent Death in the United States: Gun Ownership, Gun Control and Mortality Rates in 16 States, 2005-2009

Factors Associated with State Variations in Homicide, Suicide, and Unintentional Firearm Deaths
