Chronic alcohol consumption culminates in alcoholic hepatitis which is characterized by ballooning degeneration of hepatocytes and perivenous inflammation. The aldehydes produced by ethanol oxidation and lipid peroxidation form adducts with the hepatic proteins rendering them immunogenic and initiating an autoimmune response.
