Using indirect immunofluorescence technique combined with retrograde tracing as well as surgical lesions, a system of spinothalamic neurons containing both galanin- and cholecystokinin-like immunoreactivity has been defined. The cell bodies are located in the lumbar segments L1-L5 with a preferential localization dorsal to the central canal at rostral levels and lateral to the canal at caudal levels.
