The presence of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) was investigated in human carotid bodies using an immunoperoxidase technique. Immunoreactivity was observed in the chief cells alone, distributed in a homogeneous cytoplasmic pattern, quite different from the granular cytoplasmic pattern known for atrial myocytes.
