Organ transplantation has evolved from an experimental procedure to an accepted treatment for otherwise irreversible or congenital disorders. The immunosuppression necessary to prevent rejection enhances the severity of many infectious diseases and may potentially attenuate the response to vaccines designed to prevent disease.
