In the complex manufacturing sector a considerable amount of resources is focused on training workers and developing new skills. Increasing the effectiveness of those processes and reducing the investment required is an outstanding issue. In this paper, we present an experiment (n=20) that shows how modern metaphors such as collaborative Mixed Reality can be used to transmit procedural knowledge and could eventually replace other forms of face-to-face training. We implemented a Mixed Reality… Expand
Immersive, interoperable and intuitive mixed reality for service in industrial plants
TLDR
An innovative Mixed Reality solution representing an immersive intuitive and interoperable environment to support service in industrial plants and an overview of projects using same techniques in other fields, such as construction, risk assessment, Virtual Prototyping and Simulation Based Design is presented. Assembly Training: Comparing the Effects of Head-Mounted Displays and Face-to-Face Training
TLDR
This paper aims to close the gap in research by comparing HMD instructions to face-to-face training using a real-life engine assembly task, and shows that trainees who performed the assembly training with HMD support made 10% less picking mistakes, 5% less assembly mistakes and 60% caused less rework but they are significantly slower compared to face to face training. Effects of Level of Immersion on Virtual Training Transfer of Bimanual Assembly Tasks
TLDR
Surprisingly, despite being less favourable, the subjects’ performance of video-based training were similar to training on HTC VIVE Pro, however, video training led to a significant performance decrease in the retention test session 2 weeks after the training. Expand
A Review of Extended Reality (XR) Technologies for Manufacturing Training
TLDR
A review of the current state-of-the-art of use of XR technologies in training personnel in the field of manufacturing and presents several key application domains where XR is being currently applied, notably in maintenance training and in performing assembly task. Expand
The effectiveness of training in virtual environments
TLDR
The overall conclusion is that virtual training can yield a resulting performance that is superior to other, more traditional training formats, and is suggested for the design of such virtual environments. Expand
A Comparison of Virtual and Physical Training Transfer of Bimanual Assembly Tasks
TLDR
A study that compares the effectiveness of virtual training and physical training for teaching a bimanual assembly task and highlights the validity of virtual reality systems in training. Expand
The Use of Virtual Reality Alone Does Not Promote Training Performance (but Sense of Presence Does)
TLDR
The results of the present study indicate that a high sense of presence during the VR simulation might contribute to increased skill learning and can be used as a starting point that could be of value when further exploring VR as a tool for skill development. Expand
Realistic training in VR using physical manipulation
We propose an interaction method for mixed reality with a direct application on training applications. It is based on the combination of two key ideas: providing real user embodiment within virtualExpand
