OBJECTIVES Conversion disorders comprise neurologically unexplained symptoms with a presumed psychiatric cause, though a neuroscientific basis for this is lacking. The standard psychiatric model of conversion holds that events and processes that might explain the symptoms are, by hypothesis, either repressed or subconscious.
