Atomically sharp oxide heterostructures often exhibit unusual physical properties that are absent in the constituent bulk materials. The interplay between electrostatic boundary conditions, strain and dimensionality in ultrathin epitaxial films can result in monolayer-scale transitions in electronic or magnetic properties. Here we report an atomically sharp antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition when atomically growing polar antiferromagnetic LaMnO3 (001) films on SrTiO3 substrates…

Neutral atoms can strongly influence the intrinsic rotation and radial electric field at the tokamak edge. Here, we present a framework to investigate these effects when the neutrals dominate the
Emergent nanoscale superparamagnetism at oxide interfaces
An emergent phenomenon at the LaMnO3/SrTiO3 interface where an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator abruptly transforms into a nanoscale inhomogeneous magnetic state is reported and a model that captures the sharp onset and the thickness dependence of the magnetization is derived.

Quantum many-body interactions in digital oxide superlattices.
It is demonstrated that quantum many-body interactions are enhanced, driving the electronic states from a ferromagnetic polaronic metal to a pseudogapped insulating ground state.
Exchange bias in LaNiO3-LaMnO3 superlattices.
It is demonstrated how interfacial interactions can induce a complex magnetic structure in a non-magnetic material and specifically show that exchange bias can unexpectedly emerge in heterostructures consisting of paramagnetic LaNiO3 (LNO) and ferromagnetic LaMnO 3 (LMO).
Critical thickness and orbital ordering in ultrathin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films
Detailed analysis of transport, magnetism, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on ultrathin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films with thicknesses from 3 to 70 unit cells resulted in the identification of
Dimensionality Control of Electronic Phase Transitions in Nickel-Oxide Superlattices
The structure of metal-oxide superlattices is used to control the electronic order of the system. The competition between collective quantum phases in materials with strongly correlated electrons
Why some interfaces cannot be sharp
A central goal of modern materials physics and nanoscience is the control of materials and their interfaces to atomic dimensions. For interfaces between polar and nonpolar layers, this goal is
Growth and giant magnetoresistance properties of La‐deficient LaxMnO3−δ (0.67≤x≤1) films
Epitaxial thin films of lanthanum‐deficient LaxMnO3−δ (0.67≤x≤1) have been grown on (100) SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The as‐deposited films exhibit a ferromagnetic transition at
Critical thickness for itinerant ferromagnetism in ultrathin films of SrRuO3
Ultrathin films of the itinerant ferromagnet ${\text{SrRuO}}_{3}$ were studied using the transport and magneto-optic polar Kerr effect. We find that below 4 monolayers, the films become insulating
Spin and orbital Ti magnetism at LaMnO3/SrTiO3 interfaces.
A new kind of Ti(3+) ferromagnetism at LaMnO( 3)/SrTiO(3) epitaxial interfaces is reported, which results from charge transfer to the empty conduction band of the titanate and has spin and orbital contributions evidencing the role of orbital degeneracy.
Electron spectroscopic investigation of the semiconductor-metal transition in La1-xSrxMnO3.
The negligible intensity seen at EF using ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopic indicate an unusual semiconductor-metal transition observed for x≥0.2, consistent with the resistivity data.
Study of (La 1− x Ca x )MnO 3 . I. Magnetic Structure of LaMnO 3
Magnetic properties of the perovskite-type oxide LaMnO 3 were studied in detail, experimentally and theoretically. The properly stoichiometric LaMnO 3 had a weak ferromagnetic moment in addition to
