OBJECTIVE Recent studies on pain behavior have pointed to a relationship between expression of illness in patients with chronic pain and reports of physical complaints in other family members. This article includes two related studies. The aim of the first study was to determine whether, among pain patient families, parents who exhibited higher levels of illness behavior and emotional distress were more likely to report that their children had frequent pain complaints.
