AIMS To examine the effects of gender and acculturation on illicit drug use among the Mexican-origin population in California. DESIGN The 3012 subjects between 18 and 59 years of age were selected under a stratified, multi-stage cluster sampling method. SETTING Fresno County in California is primarily agricultural, with only one metropolitan area. Over 30% of the total population of 764,800, are Hispanics, of Mexican origin.
