IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common form of primary glomerulonephritis in the developed world and it is an important cause of end stage kidney failure. Epidemiologic studies have shown that IgAN is nearly universally distributed around the world but the frequency with which it is diagnosed varies, mostly according to local policies regarding the indications for renal biopsy.
