Little is known about risk factors for depression in methamphetamine users. Using data from 526 adults in the largest psychosocial clinical trial of methamphetamine users conducted to date, this study examined clinical, demographic, and substance use characteristics that predict the presence of a diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) three years after treatment for methamphetamine dependence. The results indicate that two risk factors predict a diagnosis of MDD: a Beck Depression…
Profiles of individuals seeking psychiatric help for psychotic symptoms linked to methamphetamine abuse – baseline results from the MAPS (methamphetamine and psychosis study)
TLDR
The psychiatric and socioeconomic profiles of individuals with co-occurring methamphetamine abuse and psychosis profiles were described, and Antisocial personality disorder, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder were highly prevalent in this sample.
Relationships Among Depression, PTSD, Methamphetamine Abuse, and Psychosis
TLDR
The results are similar to those of other studies suggesting that depression and psychosis often coexist and that the intensity of methamphetamine abuse is linked to the severity of the depressive symptoms.
A Review of Treatment Options for Co-Occurring Methamphetamine Use Disorders and Depression
TLDR
There is a large gap in knowledge regarding treatment of co-occurring methamphetamine use disorders and depression, and considering that female methamphetamine users experience higher rates of depression than men, a focus on gender-specific treatment approaches is warranted.

Chronic methamphetamine psychosis after long-term abstinence in Japanese incarcerated patients.
TLDR
Evidence is provided that a subpopulation of Meth abusers suffered from chronic Meth psychosis in long-term abstinence, and the involvement of affective symptoms in its severity is highlighted.
Clinical features, course and treatment of methamphetamine-induced psychosis in psychiatric inpatients
TLDR
All forms of violence are highly frequent in MIP inpatients and recovery from MIP can take more than a month, and initial promising findings were found regarding the efficacy of Electroconvulsive therapy in Mip patients.

Creatine as a Novel Treatment for Depression in Females Using Methamphetamine: A Pilot Study
TLDR
Creatine treatment may be a promising therapeutic approach for females with depression and comorbid methamphetamine dependence, and adverse events related to gastrointestinal symptoms and muscle cramping were determined as possibly related to creatine.
Monitoring the prevalence of methamphetamine-related presentations at psychiatric hospitals in Cape Town, South Africa.

Psychiatric symptoms in methamphetamine users.
TLDR
Findings continue to support the value of integrated treatment for co-occurring conditions, especially the importance of training counseling staff to handle psychotic symptoms when needed.
Independent versus substance-induced major depressive disorder in substance-dependent patients: observational study of course during follow-up.
TLDR
In substance-dependent patients, both DSM-IV primary and substance-induced MDD predict future depression, warranting consideration for specific treatment, suggest the importance of a careful psychiatric history that includes attention to past episodes of independent depression as well as anxiety and cluster B personality syndromes.

TLDR
Logistic regression revealed that childhood physical abuse, childhood emotional negelect, comorbidity with alcohol dependence, and treatment with antidepressant medication were significant predictors of attempting suicide.
Relation of depression diagnoses to 2-year outcomes in cocaine-dependent patients in a randomized continuing care study.
TLDR
Cocaine outcomes in depressed patients deteriorated to a greater degree after treatment than did cocaine outcomes in patients without depression, particularly in patients in RP who had a current depressive disorder at baseline.

Epidemiology of major depressive disorder: results from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcoholism and Related Conditions.
TLDR
This large survey suggests a higher prevalence of major depressive disorder in the US population than large-sample estimates from the 1980s and 1990s and the shift in highest lifetime risk from young to middle-aged adults is an important transformation in the distribution of MDD.
A Descriptive Analysis of Participant Characteristics and Patterns of Substance Use in the CSAT Methamphetamine Treatment Project: The Frist Six Months
TLDR
This early subset of MTP participants is similar to other methamphetamine-abusing populations described in the literature in age, years of education, income, and mean years of use, however, because of its multisite structure and the locations of its constituent sites, the MTP population has greater variation in ethnic makeup than do populations from other studies.
Lifetime comorbidity of DSM-IV mood and anxiety disorders and specific drug use disorders: results from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.
TLDR
The comorbidity between specific mood and anxiety disorders and specific drug use disorders is pervasive in the U.S. population and it is suggested that drug abuse prevention and intervention efforts should address other psychiatric conditions.
A multi-site comparison of psychosocial approaches for the treatment of methamphetamine dependence.
TLDR
Although the superiority of the Matrix approach over TAU was not maintained at the post-treatment timepoints, the in-treatment benefit is an important demonstration of empirical support for this psychosocial treatment approach.
