We introduce a family of Maxwellian Demons for which correlations among information bearing degrees of freedom can be calculated exactly and in compact analytical form. This allows one to precisely determine Demon functional thermodynamic operating regimes, when previous methods either misclassify or simply fail due to approximations they invoke. This reveals that these Demons are more functional than previous candidates. They too behave either as engines, lifting a mass against gravity by… Expand

The Functional Thermodynamics of Finite-State Maxwellian Ratchets
TLDR
Recent results from dynamical-system and ergodic theories that efficiently and accurately calculate the entropy rates and the rate of statistical complexity divergence of general hidden Markov processes are adapted and applied to information ratchets. Expand
Not All Fluctuations are Created Equal: Spontaneous Variations in Thermodynamic Function
TLDR
It is shown that different subsets of fluctuations lead to distinct thermodynamic functioning in Maxwellian Demons, and ascribing a single, unique functional modality to a thermodynamic system, especially one on the nanoscale, is at best misleading, likely masking an array of simultaneous, parallel thermodynamic transformations. Expand
Harnessing Fluctuations in Thermodynamic Computing via Time-Reversal Symmetries
TLDR
It is experimentally demonstrated that highly structured distributions of work emerge during even the simple task of erasing a single bit, which introduces a broad family of conditional fluctuation theorems that the component work distributions must satisfy. Expand
Information ratchets exploiting spatially structured information reservoirs.
TLDR
This work shows that the dimensionality of the reservoir has a significant impact on the performance and phase diagram of the demon and derives exact probabilities of recurrence in these systems, generalizing previously known results. Expand
Quantum and Information Thermodynamics: A Unifying Framework based on Repeated Interactions
We expand the standard thermodynamic framework of a system coupled to a thermal reservoir by considering a stream of independently prepared units repeatedly put into contact with the system. TheseExpand
Autonomous conversion of information to work in quantum dots
We consider an autonomous implementation of Maxwell's demon in a quantum dot architecture. As in the original thought experiment, only the second law of thermodynamics is seemingly violated whenExpand
Nonequilibrium correlations in minimal dynamical models of polymer copying
TLDR
A general measure of the thermodynamic efficiency with which nonequilibrium states are created is identified and the accuracy and efficiency of a family of dynamical models that produce persistent copies are analyzed, which provide insight into the design of natural self-replicating systems and can aid the designs of synthetic replicators. Expand
Oracular information and the second law of thermodynamics
TLDR
It is shown that if oracular information could be incorporated within any device that anticipates and consumes a pattern to release work, this would be inconsistent with the second law of thermodynamics, which suggests that oracular Information is only physical when used by machines that are the cause of patterns. Expand
Thermodynamics of Modularity: Structural Costs Beyond the Landauer Bound
TLDR
This work shows how to circumvent modularity dissipation by designing internal ratchet states that capture the global correlations and patterns in the ratchet's information reservoir, designed in this way to match the optimum thermodynamic efficiency of globally integrated computations. Expand
A Programmable Mechanical Maxwell’s Demon
TLDR
This work introduces and investigates a simple and explicitly mechanical model of Maxwell’s demon—a device that interacts with a memory register, a thermal reservoir and a work reservoir, and derives generalized second laws of thermodynamics for both pictures. Expand

Experimental verification of Landauer’s principle linking information and thermodynamics
TLDR
It is established that the mean dissipated heat saturates at the Landauer bound in the limit of long erasure cycles, demonstrating the intimate link between information theory and thermodynamics and highlighting the ultimate physical limit of irreversible computation. Expand
An autonomous and reversible Maxwell's demon
Building on a model introduced by Mandal and Jarzynski (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., 109 (2012) 11641), we present a simple version of an autonomous reversible Maxwell's demon. By changing theExpand

TLDR
An inequality is obtained that can derive an information processing entropy production, which gives the second law in the presence of information reservoirs, and a systematic linear response theory for information processing machines is developed. Expand
The thermodynamics of computation—a review
Computers may be thought of as engines for transforming free energy into waste heat and mathematical work. Existing electronic computers dissipate energy vastly in excess of the mean thermalExpand
Maxwell Demon Dynamics: Deterministic Chaos, the Szilard Map, and the Intelligence of Thermodynamic Systems.
TLDR
The Szilard map is introduced, a deterministic chaotic system that encapsulates the measurement, control, and erasure protocol by which Maxwellian demons extract work from a heat reservoir and symmetrizes the demon and the thermodynamic system, allowing one to explore their functionality and recover the fundamental trade-off between the thermodynamics costs of dissipation due to measurement and those due to erasure. A Gallavotti–Cohen-Type Symmetry in the Large Deviation Functional for Stochastic Dynamics
We extend the work of Kurchan on the Gallavotti–Cohen fluctuation theorem, which yields a symmetry property of the large deviation function, to general Markov processes. These include jump processesExpand

We consider the stationary state of a Markov process on a bipartite system from the perspective of stochastic thermodynamics. One subsystem is used to extract work from a heat bath while beingExpand
Maxwell's refrigerator: an exactly solvable model.
We describe a simple and solvable model of a device that-like the "neat-fingered being" in Maxwell's famous thought experiment-transfers energy from a cold system to a hot system by rectifyingExpand
Memoryless Thermodynamics? A Reply
TLDR
A solvable model of a thermodynamic ratchet that leveraged information to convert thermal energy to work and one of its longest-lived counterexamples—Maxwell’s Demon is introduced. Expand
Unifying three perspectives on information processing in stochastic thermodynamics.
TLDR
Stochastic thermodynamics is generalized to the presence of an information reservoir and it is shown that both the entropy production involving mutual information between system and controller and the one involving a Shannon entropy difference of an Information reservoir like a tape carry an extra term different from the usual current times affinity.
