}To comprehensively characterize microRNA (miRNA) expression in breast cancer, we performed the first extensive next-generation sequencing expression analysis of this disease. We sequenced small RNA from tumors with paired samples of normal and tumor-adjacent breast tissue. Our results indicate that tumor identity is achieved mainly by variation in the expression levels of a common set of miRNAs rather than by tissue-specific expression. We also report 361 new, well-supported miRNA precursors…

MicroRNA Expression in Breast Cancer Revealed by Deep Sequencing Technology
- Biology
- 2013
In a large sequencing-based study of breast tissue specimens, the differentiation of tumor subtypes and prediction of metastasis based on miRNA levels were statistically possible but not driven by dysregulation of abundant miRNAs, implicating fewer mi RNAs involved in tumorigenic processes than previously suggested.
MicroRNA deregulation in triple negative breast cancer reveals a role of miR-498 in regulating BRCA1 expression
- BiologyOncotarget
- 2016
The results indicate that miR-498 regulates BRCA1 expression in breast cancer and its overexpression could contribute to the pathogenesis of sporadic TNBC via B RCA1 downregulation.

MicroRNA and HER2-overexpressing Cancer
- BiologyMicroRNA
- 2013
Understanding the regulation and function of miRNAs in HER2-overexpressing tumors shall shed new light on the pathogenic mechanisms of microRNAs and the HER2 proto-oncogene in cancer, as well as on individualized or combinatorial anti-HER2 therapies.
Identification of Key Differentially Expressed MicroRNAs in Cancer Patients Through Pan-cancer Analysis
- Biology
- 2018
The results showed that cancer types can be grouped based on the distribution of miRNAs with different expression patterns and the value of further analysis on SDEmiRNAs as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for cancer diagnosis and treatment is provided.
Critical analysis of the potential for microRNA biomarkers in breast cancer management
- Biology, MedicineBreast cancer
- 2015
The review concludes with a critical analysis of the current state of miRNA breast cancer research and the need for further studies using large patient cohorts under well-controlled conditions before considering the clinical implementation of mi RNA biomarkers.
Novel tumor suppressor microRNA at frequently deleted chromosomal region 8p21 regulates Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor in prostate cancer
- BiologyOncotarget
- 2016
The study suggests that miR-3622b plays a tumor suppressive role and is frequently downregulated in prostate cancer, leading to EGFR upregulation and has associated diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic potential.
A novel microRNA regulator of prostate cancer epithelial–mesenchymal transition
- BiologyCell Death and Differentiation
- 2017
It is proposed that frequent loss of miR-3622a at chr8p21 region leads to induction of EMT states that in turn, promotes PCa progression and metastasis and is a novel PCa biomarker and potential drug target for developing therapeutic regimens against advanced PCa.
Identification of Circulating MicroRNA Signatures for Breast Cancer Detection
- Biology, MedicineClinical Cancer Research
- 2013
The clinical use of miRNA signatures as a noninvasive diagnostic strategy is promising, but should be further validated for different subtypes of breast cancers.

It is shown that, compared with normal breast tissue, miRNAs are also aberrantly expressed in human breast cancer, and the overall miRNA expression could clearly separate normal versus cancer tissues, with the most significantly deregulated mi RNAs being mir-125b, mir-145, mir -21, and mir-155.

Global DNA copy number analysis integrated with gene-expression data can be used to dissect the complexity of breast cancer and reveal six genomic subtypes with different clinical behavior and a striking concordance to the intrinsic subtypes, which may prove useful for understanding the mechanisms of tumor development and for prognostic and treatment prediction purposes.
