Transport of glucose across the muscle cell membrane is an important rate-limiting step in glucose uptake and is a site of metabolic regulation (l-7). The process in muscle exhibits the following properties. It is freely reversible and accelerated in both directions by insulin (8) and anoxia (9, 10). The process shows substrate stereospecificity (8, 1 I), saturation kinetics of the Michaelis-Menten type (7, 12, 13), and competition among pairs of sugars (8, 11).
