THE synthesis of a new analgesic of remarkable potency, phenazocine (2-hydroxy-5,9-dimethyl-2-phenethyl-6,7-benzomorphan), has recently been announced1. This compound, of which the (−) isomer has an analgesic effect twenty times as great as that of morphine, is now undergoing clinical trials in the United States.

TLDR
It is an unfortunate fact that the potent drugs which produce analgesia are concomitantly addicting, i.e. that they produce physical and psychic dependence as well as exhibiting the phenomenon of tolerance development.
