# Identification of Incomplete Preferences

@inproceedings{Rigotti2021IdentificationOI, title={Identification of Incomplete Preferences}, author={Luca Rigotti and Arie Beresteanu}, year={2021} }

We provide a sharp identification region for discrete choice models in which consumers’ preferences are not necessarily complete and only aggregate choice data is available to the analysts. Behavior with non complete preferences is modeled using an upper and a lower utility for each alternative so that non-comparability can arise. The identification region places intuitive bounds on the probability distribution of upper and lower utilities. We show that the existence of an instrumental variable…

Heterogeneous Choice Sets and Preferences

- Economics, Computer Science
- 2019

Theoretical findings from a robust method of discrete choice analysis when agents' choice sets are unobserved are applied to learn about households' risk preferences and choice sets from data on their deductible choices in auto collision insurance.

How many consumers are rational

- Economics
- 2009

Rationality places strong restrictions on individual consumer behavior. This paper is concerned with assessing the validity of the integrability constraints imposed by standard utility maximization,…

Discrete choice under risk with limited consideration

- Economics
- 2019

This paper is concerned with learning decision makers’ (DMs) preferences using data on observed choices from a finite set of risky alternatives with monetary outcomes. We propose a discrete choice…

Nonparametric Analysis of Random Utility Models

- Mathematics, Economics
- 2016

This paper develops and implements a nonparametric test of Random Utility Models. The motivating application is to test the null hypothesis that a sample of cross-sectional demand distributions was…

More on random utility models with bounded ambiguity

- Economics
- 2018

Econometric analysis of discrete choice has made considerable use of random utility models to interpret observed choice behavior. Much empirical research concerns choice problems in which persons act…

Context-dependent Voting

- Economics
- 2006

In recent decades psychologists have shown that the standard model of individual choice is often violated as choices are influenced by the decision context. We propose that voting behavior may be…

Indifference or indecisiveness? Choice-theoretic foundations of incomplete preferences

- Economics, Computer ScienceGames Econ. Behav.
- 2006

The standard Weak Axiom of Revealed Preferences (WARP) is relaxed and it is shown that a potent theory of individual choice (with and without risk) can be founded on this weaker axiom when it is coupled with some other standard postulates.

Estimating Discrete-Choice Models of Product Differentiation

- Economics
- 1994

This article considers the problem of "supply-and-demand" analysis on a cross section of oligopoly markets with differentiated products. The primary methodology is to assume that demand can be…

Revealed Attention

- 2009

2183 Revealed preference is one of the most influential ideas in economics and has been applied to a number of areas of economics, including consumer theory. According to standard revealed preference…

Stochastic Choice and Consideration Sets

- Economics
- 2012

We model a boundedly rational agent who suffers from limited attention. The agent considers each feasible alternative with a given (unobservable) probability, the attention parameter, and then…
