}Current neurologic assessments consider idling neurons and ischemic penumbras to be metabolically lethargic and electrically nonfunctional or nonviable. Diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutics of central nervous system dysfunctions require differentiation between viable and nonviable neurons. It is necessary to develop and document efficacious and safe techniques for reactivating idling neurons. The authors present a case study of a near drowning 12 years earlier. Areas of cortical hypometabo…

In this small pilot study, HBO2 did not effect clinical or regional cerebral blood flow improvement in TBI subjects and there were no significant objective changes in neurologic, neuropsychometric, exercise testing, MRIs, or rCBF.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in cerebral palsy

Three randomized controlled trials provide moderate strength of evidence that HBO does not improve gross motor function compared with slightly pressurized room air or wait-list controls, but these findings are controversial due to the nature of the control used and the limited number of patients studied.

PET documented brain hypoperfusion 4 years after CO poisoning and hyperbaric oxygen therapy improved visual acuity, however, it cannot endorse routine use of hyperBaric oxygen for such patients, until results of further clinical trials demonstrate efficacy of hyper baric oxygen in CO-induced chronic brain injury.
Cerebral oxygenation and the recoverable brain.
- Biology, MedicineNeurological research

Three patients are presented in whom recoverable brain tissue has been identified using SPECT imaging and increased cerebral oxygenation under hyperbaric conditions, apparently representing a reversal of the changes that render neurones dormant and the activity of cells, previously undetectable by standard electrophysiological methods, can now be demonstrated.
Hyperbaric oxygen and cerebral palsy: no proven benefit and potentially harmful

A review of 64 conditions treated with HBO concluded that evidence supported use of HBO in only 12 of them, and very specific ‘blood-gas’ conditions (such as decompression sickness, healing, and certain infections).

It is not yet possible to recommend the use of HBO in the treatment of acute and sub-acute stroke based on the scientific evidence available today, but greater independence and productivity in those successfully rehabilitated may affect the equation in favor of treatment.
