BackgroundThe aim of this study was to identify Lactobacillus isolates derived from turkeys from six Polish farms and to characterize their phenotypic and genotypic antibiotic resistance profiles.ResultsAmong 62 isolates identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and restriction analysis of 16S rDNA, the dominant species was L. salivarius (35%), followed by L. crispatus (21%), L. ingluviei (14.5%) and L. johnsonii (10%). A high prevalence of resistance to tetracycline (68% resistant isolates…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Antimicrobial Resistance of Lactobacillus johnsonii and Lactobacillus zeae in Raw Milk
TLDR
The presence of resistant strains of Lactobacillus johnsonii and LactOBacillus zeae in various types of raw milk is a potential risk in terms of spreading antimicrobial resistance through the food chain.
Virulence Profiles and Antibiotic Susceptibility of Escherichia coli Strains from Pet Reptiles
TLDR
This work examined E. coli isolates from 67 captive reptiles regarding their virulence, antibiotic susceptibility, phylogenetic affiliation, and genetic diversity, and 5-PCR fingerprinting showed considerable genetic variation in the pool of tested isolates.
Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Lactic Acid Bacteria Strains of Potential Use as Feed Additives - The Basic Safety and Usefulness Criterion
TLDR
It is highlighted that LAB may be a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance determinants, thus, the first and key step in considering the usefulness of LAB strains as feed additives should be an assessment of their antibiotic resistance.
Assessing the drug resistance profiles of oral probiotic lozenges
TLDR
This study represents the first antibiotic resistance profiling of probiotics from oral lozenges, thus highlighting the health risk especially in the prevailing threat of drug resistance globally.
Conjugal Transfer of Antibiotic Resistances in Lactobacillus spp.
TLDR
Methods that are employed to study the transfer of resistance genes using the conjugation phenomenon in lactobacilli are addressed.
Study the Probiotic Properties of Pediococcus pentosaceus Isolated from Fish Ponds in Basra City, South of Iraq
TLDR
This study focused on isolation, screening, biochemical and molecular level characterizations of potential probiotic bacteria from the fish pond in Basra city southern Iraq and indicated that Pediococcus pentosaceus has good probiotic properties.
Occurrence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria on animal farms and in their vicinity in Poland and Ukraine—review
TLDR
The review focuses on the presence of potentially pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant zoonotic bacteria and antimacterial genes in the environment of farms and food of animal origin in Poland and Ukraine and the risk of antibiotic-resistant bacteria transmission.

Assessment of antibiotic susceptibility in Lactobacillus isolates from chickens
TLDR
The findings indicate that intestinal lactobacilli should be considered a reservoir of resistance genes and that antibiotics must be used prudently in poultry production.
Antibiotic susceptibility of Lactobacillus strains isolated from domestic geese
TLDR
Data derived from this study can be used as a basis for reviewing current microbiological breakpoints for categorisation of susceptible and resistant strains of Lactobacillus genus and help to assess the hazards associated with the occurrence of drug resistance among natural intestinal microflora.
Antimicrobial activity of Lactobacillus strains of chicken origin against bacterial pathogenss.
TLDR
Results from the agar slab method showed that all Lactobacillus isolates were able to produce active compounds on solid media with antagonistic properties against these pathogens and all L lactobacilli exhibited the ability to produce H2O2 and proved to be hydrophobic.
Cloacal Lactobacillus isolates from broilers often display resistance toward tetracycline antibiotics.
TLDR
The findings strengthen the evidence of intestinal Lactobacillus species acting as a pool of antimicrobial resistance genes urging the need for prudent use of tetracycline antibiotics in poultry production.
Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Lactobacillus, Pediococcus and Lactococcus human isolates and cultures intended for probiotic or nutritional use.
TLDR
Finding of acquired resistance genes in isolates intended for probiotic or nutritional use highlights the importance of antimicrobial susceptibility testing in documenting the safety of commercial LAB.
Antimicrobial susceptibility of Bifidobacterium strains from humans, animals and probiotic products.
TLDR
The use of the LSM + cysteine medium allowed us to discriminate between intrinsic and atypical resistance properties of bifidobacteria and sets the scene for future definition of epidemiological cut-off values for all important BifidOBacterium species.
Molecular Characterization of tet(M) Genes in Lactobacillus Isolates from Different Types of Fermented Dry Sausage
TLDR
To the authors' knowledge, this is the first detailed molecular study demonstrating that taxonomically and genotypically diverse Lactobacillus strains from different types of fermented meat products can be a host for plasmid-borne tet genes.
