In this issue of the EJE, the Perspective article by Johan Mackenbach [1] takes us to a historical ‘journey through idealism’ in public health, and this he does to make a point about the ethics of public-health practice. The journey is, however, so fascinating as to possibly distract from that point; and besides, Mackenbach devotes greater attention to guiding that journey than to making the case for his point.
