This study investigated whether the previously observed association of pedophilia with lower IQs is an artifact of heterogeneity in referral source. The subjects were 832 adult male patients referred to a specialty clinic for evaluation of their sexual behavior. The patients' erotic preferences for prepubescent, pubescent, or adult partners were assessed with phallometric testing. Full scale IQ was estimated using six subtests from the WAIS-R. The results showed that the relations between… Expand
Decoding Pedophilia: Increased Anterior Insula Response to Infant Animal Pictures
The present findings raise the question whether there is also an over-responsive nurturing system in pedophilia, and exposed pedophiles and healthy controls to pictures of infant and adult animals to elicit nurturing processing without triggering sexual processing. Expand
The neuropsychology of child sexual offending: A systematic review
Abstract Relatively little research has examined the neuropsychological functioning of child sexual offenders. While research has demonstrated that child sexual offenders present withExpand
The relevance of sexual biographies in individuals convicted of child sexual abuse offenses for the development of pedosexual interests and sexual recidivism
In the literature concerning the etiology of pedosexual interests, the potential role of early sexual experiences in childhood and adolescence has been discussed. Several studies demonstrated a linkExpand
Treatment for Non-Contact Sexual Offenders: What We Know and What We Need
Abstract Much of the research on treatment of sexual offenders is focused on contact sexual offenses, which include physical contact with a victim. Conversely, there is a dearth of literature onExpand
Sexual offending and classification
Abstract Attempts at classifying sexual offenses and the persons who commit them are reviewed relative to different ways that classifications can have value. Classifying offenses continues to be aExpand

Handedness in Pedophilia and Hebephilia
The results indicate that the rates of non-right-handedness in pedophilia are much larger than previously suggested and are comparable to the rates observed in pervasive developmental disorders, such as autism, suggesting a neurological component to the development of pedophilia and hebephilia. Expand
Intelligence, memory, and handedness in pedophilia.
Pedophilia showed significant negative correlations with IQ and immediate and delayed recall memory and was related to non-right-handedness even after covarying age and IQ. Expand
Retrospective Self-Reports of Childhood Accidents Causing Unconsciousness in Phallometrically Diagnosed Pedophiles
The results showed that childhood accidents that resulted in unconsciousness were associated with pedophilia and with lower levels of intelligence and education, compatible with the hypothesis that neurodevelopmental perturbations in early childhood may increase the risk of pedophilia. Expand
Sensitivity and specificity of the phallometric test for pedophilia in nonadmitting sex offenders.
Results for offenders against women showed that those who had had sexual contact with the greatest number of women (consenting or nonconsenting) had the lowest probability of being diagnosed as pedophilic. Expand
Fraternal Birth Order and Sexual Orientation in Pedophiles
It is shown that fraternal birth order correlates with homosexuality in pedophiles, just as it does in men attracted to physically mature partners, and may prove the first identified universal factor in homosexual development. Expand
Phallometric Comparison of Pedophilic Interest in Nonadmitting Sexual Offenders Against Stepdaughters, Biological Daughters, Other Biologically Related Girls, and Unrelated Girls
The results indicated that the mean level of pedophilic response in men with offences against daughters or stepdaughters is intermediate between that in menWith offences against otherwise-related or unrelated girls and that inMen with no offences against girls at all. Expand
Grade Failure and Special Education Placement in Sexual Offenders’ Educational Histories
Assessment of adult men following illegal or clinically significant sexual behaviors or interests is consistent with the hypothesis that an erotic age preference for children sometimes results from a perturbation of neurodevelopment occurring early in life. Expand
Pedophilia and Sexual Offending Against Children: Theory, Assessment, and Intervention
Contrary to popular belief, not all sex offenders who target children are pedophiles, and not all pedophiles commit sexual offenses. But what is unequivocal is that pedophilia, which is defined as aExpand

Evidence was found that the general criminality/NRH relationship might result from increased educational difficulties that some nonright-handers experience, and education was unrelated to the handedness/pedophilia relationship, suggesting that there may be a different mechanism underlying the handednesses/pedophile relationship than the handeds/(general) criminality relationship. Infant resuscitation is associated with an increased risk of left-handedness.
The results indicate that specific types of birth stress are strongly associated with left hand and foot preference; however, much of the left laterality in non-clinical populations remains unexplained. Expand
