Between August 1992 and November 1995, 31 moribund or dead common loons (Gavia immer) found in the three Maritime provinces of Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island) were necropsied. Eight of these birds were in good body condition and died acutely from drowning or trauma. The remaining 23 birds were in poor body condition and had either chronic lead poisoning, respiratory mycosis, or oil contamination of their plumage. Loons in poor body condition had significantly higher… Expand
MORTALITY OF COMMON LOONS IN NEW ENGLAND,
Diagnostic findings are presented on 522 common loons (Gavia immer) found dead or moribund in New England (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, USA) betweenExpand
MORTALITY OF COMMON LOONS IN NEW ENGLAND, 1987 TO 2000
TLDR
Diagnostic findings are presented on 522 common loons found dead or moribund in New England between 1987 and 2000 to identify and categorize causes of mortality and quantify natural versus anthropogenic causes. Expand
LEAD EXPOSURE IN WISCONSIN BIRDS
The Wildlife Health Program of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has moni- tored lead (Pb) exposure in numerous avian species including Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), TrumpeterExpand
Necropsy Findings and Environmental Contaminants in Common Loons from New York
TLDR
Diagnostic and analytical findings are presented for 105 common loons found dead or debilitated in New York (USA) from 1972-99, finding aspergillosis and ingestion of lead fishing weights were the most common pathologies encountered. Expand
Survival rates and blood metal concentrations in two species of free-ranging North American sea ducks.
TLDR
Evidence indicated that Hg concentrations affected recapture probability in white-winged scoters, and blood samples may not adequately represent long-term exposure to Hg, and conclusions regarding Hg effects on these birds should be considered with caution. Expand
Contaminants in common eiders (Somateria mollissima) of the Canadian Arctic
TLDR
With the exception of one adult bird collected near Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut, eiders had detectable but low concentrations of most POPs, in some cases markedly lower than European eiders, and in all cases far lower than POP levels found in sympatric marine birds. Expand
Intestinal Acanthocephaladiosis in Olrog's Gulls (Larus atlanticus): Profilicollis chasmagnathi as Possible Cause of Death
TLDR
Diet may play a central role in the epidemiology of disease and mortality events in this species, particularly among hatch-year Olrog's gulls in the Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina. Expand
Anti-parasite treatment, but not mercury burdens, influence nesting propensity dependent on arrival time or body condition in a marine bird.
TLDR
The results suggest that parasites can play a critical role in decisions to invest in avian breeding annually, particularly among individuals with a late onset to breeding, and in poor condition. Expand
Plunging floater survival causes cryptic population decline in the Common Loon
TLDR
The hidden nature of the Wisconsin decline points out that floater populations can mask major drops in breeding populations and throws into question population trends in other loon populations, whose floaters are largely unknown. Expand
Mercury and other Contaminants in Common Loons Breeding in Atlantic Canada
TLDR
Mean blood mercury concentrations in Kejimkujik loons are the highest found in breeding common loons across North America. Expand
