The principle phytoestrogens isoflavones (coumestrol, genisteen, daidyein and equol) and lignin (enterolactone and enteroradiol) are low molecular weight diphenolic antimicrobial compound (phytoalexine) synthesized de novo in plants in respone to exposure to bacterial pathogens and may exert their biological activity by (i) mimicking the action of endogenous oestrogen (ii) acting as oestrogen antagonists (iii) altering the pattern of synthesis and metabolism of endogenous hormone (iv) modifying… CONTINUE READING
