TH E need for maternity hospital beds in Glasgow is acute. At present less than 60 per cent of deliveries take place in hospital in spite of curtailing the lying-in period to a greater extent than is generally thought desirable. The housing shortage in the city and the inadequacy of much of the existing accommodation for domiciliary midwifery magnifies the problem so that the pressure on beds is not only on medical but on social grounds as well.
