A Governor is a part of a machine by means of which the velocity of the machine is kept nearly uniform, notwithstanding variations in the driving-power or the resistance. Most governors depend on the centrifugal force of a piece connected with a shaft of the machine. When the velocity increases, this force increases, and either increases the pressure of the piece against a surface or moves the piece, and so acts on a break or a valve.
On mechanical governors for electric motors
In this work I propose a mechanism whereby a Watt mechanical governor can be used in the context of electric motor control. The motor considered is the shunt or parallel dc motor, in which flux
Governing of Compression-Ignition Oil Engines:
In this paper is discussed the application of some of the concepts of modern control theory to the problem of the governing of compression-ignition engines. A physical description of the problem is
A short history of hydropower control
Today's control systems have their roots, to a great extent, in the speed control of driving engines (prime movers) and particularly in the speed control of water turbines. The first turbines with
Watt steam governor stability
The physics of the fly-ball governor, introduced to regulate the speed of steam engines, is here analysed anew. The original analysis is generalized to arbitrary governor geometry. The well-known
Centrifugal Governors: The Story of a Mistake
TLDR
The article deals with the main problems of the governors and their solutions suggested in Maxwell's, Vyshnegradsky's and Chebyshev's fundamental works, and some wrong directions in the development of governor design were identified.
A History of A 4 . A History of Automatic Control
TLDR
Based on servo and communications engineering developments of the 1930s, and driven by the need for high-performance gun control systems, the coherent body of theory known as classical control emerged during and just after WWII in the US, UK and elsewhere, as did cybernetics ideas.
A History of Automatic Control
TLDR
The immediate post-war period was marked by great claims for automation, but also great fears, while the digital computer opened new possibilities for automatic control.
From the Series-Dynamo Machine to the Singing Arc: Gérard-Lescuyer, Blondel, Poincaré
At the end of the nineteenth century, magneto- or dynamo-electricmachines were used in order to turn mechanical work into electrical work and vice versa. With the former type of machine, the magnetic
The Application of Modern Control Theory to a Turbocharged Diesel Engine Powerplant
A brief review of the intrinsic features of diesel engine performance and control is given. The introduction of electronic control to fuel systems is described. It is shown that engine dynamic
The Models of Centrifugal Governors in the Collection of Bauman Moscow State Technical University
In the period of development of higher technical education great importance was given to the visibility in training of engineers. This was realized with the help of models of machines and mechanisms.
