Apoptosis of articular chondrocytes is associated with the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). Recently, we demonstrated that hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-2α, encoded by Epas1, causes OA cartilage destruction by regulating the expression of various matrix-degrading enzymes.
