Therapeutic angiogenesis with gene encoding vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a new potential treatment in cardiovascular disease. However, unregulated VEGF-mediated angiogenesis has the potential to promote tumor growth, accelerate diabetic proliferative retinopathy, and promote rupture of atherosclerotic plaque.
