Hyponatremia has been shown to be associated with gait disturbances, decreased mentation, and falls. The study objective was to determine the incidence of hyponatremia in patients who experienced a substantial skeletal fracture (hip/pelvis/femur). During an 18-month period from March 2007 to August 2008 serum sodium levels were evaluated in 364 cases of bone fracture in patients aged 65 years or older and in 364 nonfracture patients aged 65 years and older seen in an urban emergency room…
Influence of Hyponatremia on Spinal Bone Quality and Fractures Due to Low-Energy Trauma
TLDR
It is suggested that patients with chronic hyponatremia have an increased prevalence of fractures after low-energy trauma due to a decreased bone quality, particularly with elderly patients.
Hyponatremia independent of osteoporosis is associated with fracture occurrence.
TLDR
Mild hyponatremia may be a readily identifiable and potentially modifiable risk factor for fracture and is independent of osteoporosis.

TLDR
Mild prolonged chronic hyponatremia is independently associated with hip fracture risk in the elderly population, although the absolute risk is low, and proof that correcting hypon atremia will result in a reduction of hip fractures is lacking.
Prevalence of Hyponatremia in Femur Neck Fractures: A One-Year Survey in an Urban Emergency Department
TLDR
It is found that hyponatremia is significantly associated with femoral neck fracture and Serum sodium should hence be regularly assessed and hypon atremia eventually corrected.
Hyponatremia Is Associated With Increased Osteoporosis and Bone Fractures in a Large US Health System Population.
TLDR
The hypothesis that hyponatremia is a risk factor for osteoporosis and fracture is supported and additional studies are required to evaluate whether correction of hypon atremia will improve patient outcomes.
Prevalence, Incidence and Etiology of Hyponatremia in Elderly Patients with Fragility Fractures
TLDR
Hyponatremia is highly prevalent in EPFF, seen in 26% of cases, and dehydration and prescription of thiazide diuretics and proton pump inhibitors were the commonest potentially causative factors, not SIADH.
Hyponatremia Is Associated with Worse Outcomes from Fall Injuries in the Elderly
TLDR
It is shown that hyponatremia is associated with worse outcome from fall-related injuries in the elderly, with an increased ISS, longer LOS, and a higher risk of death.
Hyponatremia, Hypokalemia, and Fragility Fractures in Old Patients: More than an Association?
TLDR
It is suggested that hyponatremia and hypokalemia have to be considered as a marker of poor health more than an independent fracture risk.
Hyponatremia in elderly patients with fragility fractures of the proximal femur: a cross-sectional study
TLDR
In elderly individuals, fragility fractures of the proximal femur may correlate with hyponatremia, particularly among patients on amiodarone or antidepressants, especially among patients with serum sodium levels recorded in their charts.

Mild hyponatremia and risk of fracture in the ambulatory elderly.
TLDR
Mild asymptomatic hypon atremia is associated with bone fracture in ambulatory elderly and avoiding iatrogenic hyponatremia or treating hyponAtremia may decrease the number of bone fractures in this population.

Mild chronic hyponatremia is associated with falls, unsteadiness, and attention deficits.
Neurologic sequelae after treatment of severe hyponatremia: a multicenter perspective.
TLDR
It was concluded that patients with severe chronic hyponatremia are most likely to avoid neurologic complications when their electrolyte disturbance is corrected slowly.
Paroxetine-induced hyponatremia in older adults: a 12-week prospective study.
TLDR
The results provide a foundation for understanding the etiology and risk factors associated with paroxetine-induced hyponatremia and identify patient characteristics that may account for variability in susceptibility to this adverse event.
Hyponatremia and hypernatremia in the elderly.
TLDR
Clinicians should have a clear appreciation of the roles that iatrogenic interventions and lapses in nutrition and nursing care frequently play in upsetting the homeostatic balance in elderly patients, particularly those who are in longterm institutional and inpatient settings.

TLDR
A major new approach to treatment of hyponatremia is the development of aquaretics: AVP‐receptor antagonists that provide a targeted therapeutic approach to correcting the many kinds of Hyponatremeia caused by excess AVP levels.
Observations regarding the use of the aquaretic agent conivaptan for treatment of hyponatremia
TLDR
The data reveal that conivaptan is useful in the management of significant hyponatremia, and this new class of drugs holds great promise for the treatment of dilutional hyp onatremic disorders.
Central nervous system active medications and risk for fractures in older women.
TLDR
Community-dwelling older women taking narcotics have an increased risk for any nonspine fracture, and those taking antidepressants have a greater risk for nonspine fractures, including hip fracture.

TLDR
The health of older adults deteriorates after hip fracture, and efforts to reduce the incidence of hip fracture could lower subsequent mortality, morbidity, and health services use.
