The genus Hyphantus is restricted to South America and Hyphantus olivae was described by Vaurie in 1963, using individuals collected in Vila Oliva, a district of Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State. During the 2000/2001 season, H. olivae was observed attacking vineyards in the Northeastern Region of the State.
