  • Enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells are the dominant endocrine cell type in the oxyntic mucosa. Normally regarded as histamine-producing cells, they are exquisitely sensitive to the trophic action of gastrin and undergo a hyperplastic increase in a variety of hypergastrinemic conditions.
