We describe string-theory and d = 11 supergravity solutions involving symmetric spaces of constant negative curvature. Many examples of non-supersymmetric string compactifications on hyperbolic spaces Hr of finite volume are given in terms of suitable cosets of the form Hr/?, where ? is a discrete group. We describe in some detail the cases of the non-compact hyperbolic spaces F2 and F3, representing the fundamental regions of H2 and H3 under SL(2,) and the Picard group, respectively. By…

Hyperbolic Space Forms and Orbifold Compactification in M-Theory

We analyze solutions of supergravity and string theories which involve real hyperbolic spaces. Examples of string compactifications are given in terms of hyperbolic coset spaces of finite volume Γ\HN

The (n + 1)-dimensional Milne universe with extra free directions is used to construct simple FRW cosmological string models in four dimensions, describing expansion in the presence of matter with p=

Orbifold compactification and solutions of M-theory from Milne spaces

Abstract. In this paper, we consider solutions and spectral functions of M-theory from Milne spaces with extra free dimensions. Conformal deformations to the metric associated with real hyperbolic

TeV-scale gravity in Horava-Witten theory on a compact complex hyperbolic threefold

The field equations and boundary conditions of Horava-Witten theory, compactified on a smooth compact spin quotient of CH^3, where CH^3 denotes the hyperbolic cousin of CP^3, are studied in the

On gravitational Phase Transitions, T-duality and Symmetry Breaking in AdS/CFT

In this thesis we study several problems in the context of AdS/CFT. The first is that of gravitational phase transitions between AdS and dS geometries in the Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity. Such

Topologically induced instability in string theory

Using Witten's generalised AdS/CFT correspondence, we show that there are certain differentiable manifolds Z10 such that string theory is unstable (to the emission of ``large branes'') on Z10 no

Holography and quaternionic Taub-NUT

As a concrete application of the holographic correspondence to manifolds which are only asymptotically Anti-de Sitter, we take a closer look at the quaternionic Taub-NUT space. This is a four

Vanishing cosmological constant by gravitino-dressed compactification of 11D supergravity

A bstractWe consider compactifications induced by the gravitino field of eleven dimensional supergravity. Such compactifications are not trivial in the sense that the gravitino profiles are not

The Large-N Limit of Superconformal Field Theories and Supergravity

We show that the large-N limits of certainconformal field theories in various dimensions includein their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes,

Curved branes from string dualities

We describe a simple method for generating new string solutions for which the brane worldvolume is a curved space. As a starting point we use solutions with NS-NS charges combined with

Anti-de Sitter space and holography

Recently, it has been proposed by Maldacena that large $N$ limits of certain conformal field theories in $d$ dimensions can be described in terms of supergravity (and string theory) on the product of

Timelike T-duality, de Sitter space, large N gauge theories and topological field theory

T-Duality on a timelike circle does not interchange IIA and IIB string theories, but takes the IIA theory to a type IIB* theory and the IIB theory to a type IIA* theory. The type II* theories admit

New M-theory Backgrounds with Frozen Moduli

We propose examples, which involve orbifolds by elements of the U-duality group, with M-theory moduli fixed at the eleven-dimensional Planck scale. We begin by reviewing asymmetric orbifold
