Hydronephrosis in the Fetus and Neonate: Causes, Management, and Outcome

Hydronephrosis is one of the most commonly identified prenatal anomalies, and the severity may vary from mild to severe, depending on the underlying cause, many of which stem from disruptions in the formation of the renal collecting system. Permanent renal damage may occur if the condition progresses before birth, and in some cases, oligohydramnios may result in lung hypoplasia, a potentially fatal condition. Many cases resolve spontaneously before birth, but for those that do not, the…

Sometimes neonatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be very helpful to further evaluate complex urinary tract anomalies but is not used unless other techniques are insufficient to define the abnormality or to evaluate extent of disease, such as in neonatal neoplasms.

US remains the first-line imaging modality for evaluating the genitourinary system during the neonatal period and may be enhanced with the use of focused, high-resolution linear images of the pyramids, providing a powerful combination for morphologic and functional assessment.
