The Mediterranean-Black Sea system consists of two semi-enclosed basins connected by the Turkish Straits. In turn, the Mediterranean Sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean through the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. The hydrological cycle of the system is driven by fresh water exchanges between the atmosphere, continents and oceans, and by salty water mass exchange among the ocean basins. Monitoring such water fluxes, especially its time evolution, is essential to understand the water cycle in the…

The Water Cycle of the Baltic Sea Region From GRACE/GRACE-FO Missions and ERA5 Data
The water cycle of the Baltic Sea has been estimated from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and the GRACE Follow-On satellite time-variable gravity measurements, and precipitation

The Hydrological Cycle in the Mediterranean Region and Implications for the Water Budget of the Mediterranean Sea
Abstract The hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean region is analyzed focusing on climatology and interannual to interdecadal variability, in particular long-term changes related to the
Internal and external forcing of sea level variability in the Black Sea
Abstract The variability of sea level in the Black Sea is forced by a combination of internal and external processes of atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial origin. We use a combination of satellite
The circulation of the Mediterranean Sea: a historical review of experimental investigations
The Mediterranean Sea is an enclosed basin composed of two similar basins and different sub-basins. It is a concentration basin, where evaporation exceeds precipitation. In the surface layer there is
Dynamic response of the Black Sea elevation to intraseasonal fluctuations of the Mediterranean sea level
Response of the Black Sea elevation to intraseasonal sea level changes in the Mediterranean is studied using satellite altimetry data and a linear analytical model. Satellite observations show that
Water transport among the world ocean basins within the water cycle
Abstract. The global water cycle involves water-mass transport on land, in the atmosphere, in the ocean, and among them. Quantification of such transport, especially its time evolution, is essential
Circulation in the Mediterranean Sea
The overall functioning of the Mediterranean Sea, which transforms Atlantic Water (AW) into Mediterranean Waters (MWs), has been comprehended for a while, and the process of dense water formation,
Estimation of water fluxes into the Mediterranean Sea
[1] This study provides an estimate of the water runoff into the Mediterranean Sea and its variation from the 1980s to the year 2000. First the variability of climatic and physical factors across the
