Starting from the Vlasov-Maxwell system, an exact relativistic hydrodynamic closure for a special type water bag distributions satisfying the Vlasov equation has been derived. It has been shown that the hydrodynamic equations are fully equivalent to the original Vlasov-Maxwell equations. The linear stability of the exact hydrodynamic closure has been studied as well. It has been shown that all basic features of the small signal gain can be derived from the fluid dynamic description developed…

Soliton solutions for free-electron-laser applications.

A new class of nonlinear traveling-wave solutions of the relativistic cold-fluid model are presented, which represent possible nonlinear saturated states of the free-electron-laser instability and may also have useful applications in particle acceleration schemes.

Free electron laser

The possibility of a new type of laser has been investigated by computer simulation using a fully relativistic electromagnetic particle code which has one spatial and three velocity dimensions. By

Nonlinear density waves in the single-wave model

The single-wave model equations are transformed to an exact hydrodynamic closure by using a class of solutions to the Vlasov equation corresponding to the waterbag model. The warm fluid dynamic

Analytical theory of short-pulse free-electron laser oscillators.

A simple model for the nonlinear evolution of a short-pulse free-electron laser oscillator in the small gain regime is derived and the analytical and numerical results are compared with the experimental observations from the Free-Electron Laser for Infrared eXperiments experiment.

Contemporary Accelerator Physics

This book adopts a non-traditional approach to accelerator theory. The exposition starts with the synchro-betatron formalism and continues with the linear and nonlinear theories of transverse

Quantum theory of a free electron laser

Spontaneous emission by electrons moving in a magnetic field constant in time and periodic in space (with circular polarization) is calculated using exact solutions of the corresponding Dirac

Kinetic description of the sideband instability in a helical‐wiggler free‐electron laser

The Vlasov–Maxwell equations are used to investigate properties of the sideband instability for a tenuous, relativistic electron beam propagating in the z direction through a constant‐amplitude

Stimulated Emission of Bremsstrahlung in a Periodic Magnetic Field

The Weizsacker‐Williams method is used to calculate the gain due to the induced emission of radiation into a single electromagnetic mode parallel to the motion of a relativistic electron through a

Stimulated emission from relativistic electrons passing through a spatially periodic transverse magnetic field

Stimulated emission from a relativistic beam of electrons passing through a spatially periodic right-hand circularly polarized magnetic field is considered. The amplification is found to be due to a
