Abstract The effect of water on radiation-induced CO 2 − radicals in calcitic and aragonitic calcium carbonate (CaCO 2 ) and in hydroxyapatite (HAP) has been studied by electron spin resonance (ESR) and near-infrared (NIR) reflectance measurements. Hydration suppresses the formation of orthorhombic CO 2 − ions, but induces rotating or tumbling CO 2 − ions (isotropic CO 2 − ) in aragonite and in HAP.
