BACKGROUND Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is a prototypic long pentraxin with structural similarities in the C-terminal domain to the classical short pentraxins C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid P component. PTX3 is suggested to play an important role in the innate resistance against pathogens, regulation of inflammatory reactions, and clearance of apoptotic cells.
