We studied the brains of three patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), all of whom developed subacutely progressive dementia unassociated with opportunistic infection or neoplasm in the central nervous system. Computed tomographic (CT) scans of the head revealed cortical atrophy, ventricular dilation, and diffuse hypodensity of the centrum semiovale.
