Most nations of the world periodically publish N x N origin-destination tables, recording the number of people who lived in geographic subdivision i at time t and j at t+1. We have developed and widely applied to such national tables and other analogous (weighted, directed) socioeconomic networks, a two-stage--double-standardization and (strong component) hierarchical clustering--procedure. Previous applications of this methodology and related analytical issues are discussed. Its use is… Expand

Dendrogram/Regionalization of U. S. Counties Based upon Migration Flows
• P. Slater
• Computer Science, Mathematics
• ArXiv
• 2012
A "hierarchical regionalization" of 3,107 county-level units of the United States based upon 1995-2000 intercounty migration flows is obtained, with an ordinal scale--rather than the originally-derived cardinal scale of the doubly-standardized values--in which groupings/ features are more immediately apparent. Matrix plots of reordered bistochastized transaction flow tables: A United States intercounty migration example
We present a number of variously rearranged matrix plots of the $3, 107 \times 3, 107$ 1995-2000 (asymmetric) intercounty migration table for the United States, principally in its bistochasticizedExpand
Heterogeneity of Global and Local Connectivity in Spatial Network Structures of World Migration
• Physics, Computer Science
• ArXiv
• 2016
It is found that world migration is neither globally interconnected nor reproduces the geographic boundaries as drawn on a world map but involves a heterogeneous interplay of global and local tendencies in different network regions. Expand
Comparative Bi-stochastizations and Associated Clusterings/Regionalizations of the 1995-2000 U. S. Intercounty Migration Network
The Wang-Li-König-algorithm for the minimum of the alternative, squared-norm form of the divergence, results in a bi-stochastic matrix that appealingingly emerged as well-defined entities in the SK-based strong-component hierarchical clustering. Expand
Extracting spatial information from networks with low-order eigenvectors
• Computer Science, Physics
• ArXiv
• 2011
It is observed that some low order eigenvectors localize very well and seem to reveal small geographically cohesive regions that match remarkably well with political and administrative boundaries in two spatially distributed networks. Expand
Multiscale Network Reduction Methodologies: Bistochastic and Disparity Filtering of Human Migration Flows between 3, 000+ U. S. Counties
• P. Slater
• Computer Science, Mathematics
• ArXiv
• 2009
The performance of the bistochastic filter appears to be superior-at least in this specific case-in two respects: it requires far fewer links to complete a stongly-connected network backbone; and it "belittles" small flows and nodes less-a principal desideratum of SBV. Expand
The Relation Between Global Migration and Trade Networks
• Economics, Computer Science
• ArXiv
• 2013
It is found that migration significantly boosts trade across countries and the subset of products for which the presence of a community of migrants significantly increases trade intensity is identified. Expand

Overall, it is found that migration significantly boosts trade across sectors and the subset of products for which the presence of a community of migrants significantly increases trade intensity is identified. Expand
The World Trade Web: A Multiple-Network Perspective
It is shown how IT and FDI correlation changes with sectors: they are complements in manufacturing, but substitutes in services. Expand
Human migration as a complex network: appropriate abstraction, and the feasibility of Network Science tools

In this paper we use the novel (at least in regional science) technique of social network analysis and apply it to one of the most analyzed topics in the discipline, US internal migration. We want toExpand
Structural Inference of Hierarchies in Networks

This work gives a precise definition of hierarchical structure, gives a generic model for generating arbitrary hierarchical structure in a random graph, and describes a statistically principled way to learn the set of hierarchical features that most plausibly explain a particular real-world network.
